We're Out Of Beer

The tagline was, "When you're out of Schlitz, you're out of beer."

Pabst has decided to stop brewing Schlitz, bringing a 177 year old brand name to an end.

This is kind of a bummer for me, it was one of my favorite American style beers, you just never saw it in the stores down here in Florida and I once found some in Iowa on a visit.

Amusingly, based on the tag line, I kept the last bottle from that Iowa visit, so I'd never run out of beer.  It's, at least, 8-years old.  I'm afraid to open the bottle now.

  1. Schlitz was probably the best cheap beer we consumed as teenagers. We bought it in quart bottles. There were also forays into Schlitz Malt Liquor on several occasions in college that generally ended poorly.

  2. It will probably be a collector's item soon. Schlitz stoped being available here a few years ago. Pabst doesn't operate their own breweries any more. Most of their products used to be made for them at the Miller mega brewery in Ft. Worth but they recently moved production to the AB facility in Houston. I think they may also contract some stuff out of somewhere on the west coast for those markets. And some of their specialty brands like Pearl are made by smaller contractors, that one in particular is located in Austin. Old Style is a notable exception as well, still being made at the former Heileman's brewery in LaCross. Most of their products don't necessarily follow the classic formulas they did back in the old days, especially brands that they aquired over the years.

  3. I remember the slogan but don't remember ever drinking it. I do riff on the Schaeffer is the one beer to have when you're having more than one. We used be able to get Asahi in mini cans, for when you're having less than one.
I went to college in Western NY so the cheap beer was Goebel made by Strohs or Matt's in beer balls.
