I thought those signs were meant as a vicious mockery. Then I followed the links.
The “Wir folgten nur Befehl” signs are being displayed, openly and willingly, by NYPD. They could have written anything at all, and they figured that this was their best bet. The NYPD brand was too tainted, so they went for the higher warm fuzzy quotient of the SS-TotenkopfverbÀnde.
And then it hits me. I was trying for vicious mockery, but all I managed to do was state the literal truth. In my defense, I'd like to point out that the police (in a city noted for having a high Jewish population) are trying to defend themselves by hiding behind Adolf Eichmann. You think you can top that? I dare you to try.
