I wonder if my utter failure to retain calculus has more to do with learning it incompletely due to the TA only speaking broken english than anything about me.
I know I actively avoided complex maths after passing the damn thing, even going so far as to change majors.
Was the experience of learning it so unpleasant that I came to think of using it in the same light?
I do know that I retain none of it today.
BTDT. Was in the advanced math class in HS, but totally crashed-and-burned in calculus in college. Always blamed it on the TAs and teaching methods.
ReplyDeleteI dropped out instead of changing majors (I'd also married). Still don't have a degree. I do use math quite a bit in my job, though.
NOTE: This was >40 years ago. YMMV.
Another BTDT here. I had a "visiting professor" from India teaching freshman calculus. I think I only understood half of what she said, and not because it was calculus. For some reason, that was about the time I ended up changing majors.
