Things That Don't Cost More

I order a lot online.

I get a lot of tracking numbers.

I've noticed something.

The five day shipping takes exactly the same amount of time and follows the exact same route as the overnight shipping, if you remove the time where the package just sits at one location.

What that really means is actually costs MORE to deliver it "ground" because they have to pay to warehouse it for a couple of days instead of just keeping it moving.

They are most certainly using the same vehicles to transport both packages.

Am I pissed about this?  Absolutely not.  I'm just amused that the cheaper service is delayed deliberately rather than the method of transportation being slower.

    Having a little experience in a distribution center, it isn't necessarily about the path but the space available.

    The routes are fairly well defined as you noticed; what makes the difference is the priority product is given. Space is limited on trucks and that is the money maker. The distribution centers control cubic space to a high degree. Package information includes all the information to calculate just exactly how much space it will take up. Those products that don't have to go the next day are bumped for the ones that do.
