The scale of WW1 still boggles the mind sometimes.
We're still finding stuff at Gettysburg and that was a mere three day battle. Verdun was 100 times longer (and that's just the battle, not the entire time the area was contested.)
if you are ambitious and interested, Michelin published a bunch of tour guides to the battlefields (just after WW1), with maps, pics and stuff.
