I Am Troubled

They're dismantling Confederate memorials all over the place.

On one hand, I don't think that commemorating chattel slavery is something we should be doing.

On the other, erasing history is as great an evil as slavery ever was.

It's worse because many of these memorials mark and mourn the men who did not come home and were erected by the people who missed them.

    It's worse than that. As part of the process of national reconciliation, it was agreed that the losers would be allowed to console themselves with their courage. Ever since, the States of the former Confederacy have provided more than their share of troops and support for the defense of the victorious Union. It seems to me unwise to go back on that deal.
