Both with a 16" barrel, the AK and AR have similar overall lengths when they're both Magpulified.
But since the stock doesn't contain the recoil system in the AK, it can be folded and thus can be made shorter.
Where the AR shines is weight, and I think, better sights. As shown, the AKM is 8.7 lb., the AR is 7.8 lb.
To get an AR to be as short as a 16" barreled AK, you've got to clip the barrel...
...down to about 10.5".
This does affect performance down range. But, hey, at least the AR is very light now! Without the optic, the AR shown above is a svelte 6.7 lb. with the glass adding a mere pound.
