7 or more gets a consciousness roll and 14 gets the first death roll, 42 is instant death without a roll.
I've often thought about survival adventurer type characters who carry a light rifle with light ammunition for most things and an assault rifle for more serious work. .22 WMR appears to be stout enough to get most game.
My original idea was a Remington 341A which does 1d+2 pi- with common ammo. Much less effective.

The main reason for looking at the lighter rounds is weight. 100 rounds each of .22 LR, .22 WMR and 5.56 NATO come in at 0.77 lb., 0.79 lb., and 2.7 lb. respectively.
The downside of the scoped Savage 93F is that it's 6.3 lb. with a mere 5 rounds loaded; 6.4 with 10 rounds. That's 237 rounds of 5.56... More than a basic load.
It would become worth the effort is military rounds are extremely expensive in the game setting and rimfire rounds aren't.
