We'll see how much is lost tomorrow when the sun comes up. But...
So far, the main altar area is mostly unaffected, and only a few of the inner vault ceilings have collapsed, so far.
I pray that that is it.
And I really pray that this really was an accident. Anything else is pretty much casus belli. If so, maybe we can get Pope Benedict back and have him declare another Crusade.
The architecture and construction of those buildings is so amazing. In the days before steel, I-beam reinforcements, they built this church that has been there 850 years. It stood through the French revolution. It stood through two World Wars, and so much more.
It's evidence of how superior Western Civilization really is.
And they built it using muscle powered machinery. Built using techniques that have had to be relearned in rebuilding other cathedrals and castles damaged by war and fire.
Truly amazing that such huge buildings are so open and airy and not oppressive, but uplifting.
I think part of it is the residue of the souls of the workmen who lovingly built these places.
I'm not Catholic or even religious. But this is a horrible shame because religious or not that was a major historical loss. And it will be even more horrific if it wasn't an accident.
