For me, it was the VFW who were very welcoming and friendly. The Legion was very closed-off and cliquey, and I had the impression that they did not want me intruding on their little club.
But the VFW - it was like I was a long-lost family member returning home.
Every post is different is exactly right! The post we checked out is a short walk from VFW and AmVets.
Being cold war era means no VFW for me. AmVets and American Legion are my options.
Bubba and his brother were long time members back in Iowa, they stopped going when the guys from GWOT started changing the place into just another bar and letting in just anyone; thus missing the point of having a membership requirement.
They chose the Legion because the local VFW was solidly Army and if you were Navy... well...
