I'm on record as being critical of the police and how they do things.
It sometimes makes me unpopular with other conservatives.
It should be noted, however, that I've never been an advocate of NO cops.
We the people, on our own, are not good at the policing job.
Lynching is the norm where there's no professional law enforcement in America.
Read that again. Again. AGAIN.
When there are no cops, then we won't HAVE to call them to deal with all the shit we see wrong around us.
Trust me, you want the cops to be between us.
Thus far it's been the police preventing a reckoning from civilized America.
I pretty much completely agree with this. No police at all would pretty much turn the US into a 3rd world mess. Probably nearly overnight. There is a big distance between a police state and complete anarchy. Somewhere between there is better than either end.
ReplyDeleteDid you see my article at The Libertarian Enterprise, "Do you WANT Death Squads?"
ReplyDeleteA thought experiment:
ReplyDelete1. According to my reading of the Fifth Amendment, US citizens cannot be required to report crimes that they commit. Something about self-incrimination, IIRC.
2. Is it required that a US citizen report a crime that they only witness? Given the complexity of the criminal code, I would have concerns if this requirement were the case.
3. If #1 is true, and the answer to #2 is "no", then what *IN THE LAW* currently prohibits a citizen shooting dead a burglar/home invader, and disposing of the remains, without notifying the authorities?
I am specifically NOT discussing the MORALITY of the above, just the legal aspects; nor am I advocating it.
To me, it seems to flow from the discussion of "powers delegated to the police by the citizens" from earlier.
Well, I think there is a requirement to dispose of a dead body in a certain way, and just burying it if you aren't a licensed mortician is probably prohibited. There may be others.
DeleteVery likely that there are laws about proper disposal of a human body, but wouldn't reporting the violation of those ALSO fall under the Fifth Amendment provision against self-incrimination?
