Those are really deep grooves. I had targets a few years ago that had a really weird "spiral galaxy" looking burn marks in the holes... Really freaked me out until I figured out what was going on. Turns out Hornady V-Max bullets don't work well in a Springfield 03A3... Too thin of a jacket, and the sharp and deep grooves in the barrel were cutting the bullets through and the load I was using was pushing hot and hard enough that the lead was escaping. Needless to say accuracy was poo-poo. Switching to a more normal FMJ bullet solved the problem entirely. Also those plastic tipped bullets don't feed well in an M1 Garand. The only things I have that they work well in is the M1A (loves 'em) or the Savage 111 (shoots just about anything well).

ReplyDeleteV-Max (and Z-Max) 168gr works GREAT in my FAL. I've never tried it in .30-06 at all. It's decent in .270 though.
