I sometimes get a lot of ribbing from some people because all three of my Corvettes are automatics. It isn't that I don't know how to drive a manual, I have a pickup truck that has a 5 speed (New Venture 1500) in it. But there is nothing wrong with a well built automatic in a hot rod or even a race car. And a lot of recent automatics are actually pretty good as they come from the factory. Here's the thing I tell a lot of people... The people who have won the top spots in the yearly points chase in our regional sanctioning body the last few years pretty much all run automatics. -swj
Autos just kept getting better. I've noticed it a lot in The Beast. The 6L80 will drop one gear when it's appropriate instead of ignoring the pedal and dropping two gears like the 4L60E did.
Shifts are much smoother with the newer design and you have to be staring at the tach to see when the converter locks. You could feel it in a 700R4 or 4L60E.
