The Law Of Small Numbers

Some napkin calculations...

SNAP is $9.2 billion a month.

There are 42 million people on the program.

That's a bit less than $220 per person per month.

$220 a month doesn't seem like a lot.

But I noticed something about my grocery bill and comparing it to $55 a week.

I sure wouldn't be fat if I could only spend $55 a week on groceries.

And I know how to cook from raw ingredients, the cheapest way to get food.

I've also noticed that the only skinny people I see using any kind of SNAP or EBT card are the extremely elderly or the obviously tweaking.

How do the others get and stay fat on this?

Even buying candy won't sustain it because candy is very expensive per calorie.

My girlfriend works at dollar tree- she see's EBT cards with balances as high as 15K. I mentioned this to the cashier at Krogers 2 days ago and he claims he has seen balances as high as 17K. There is obviously something else going on here..................................................

    2. I knew a guy once who was getting them after he was laid off - he said he couldn't use all he was getting.
He couldn't use them to buy cat food, but he could use them to buy human food for his cat - and he was still carrying a balance of $12k+

  2. SNAP is often not the only "benefits" they are leeching. And usually there are several people in a household all getting welfare. And many of them also take handouts from charitable groups also.

  3. Don't forget this:
    - The 42 million includes kids; as a family the total is MUCH higher.
    - if I understand it correctly, there are different levels though I don't know what they depend on.

The people I've known on SNAP openly stated that they got ore than they could use and they carried a substantial balance on their EBT because of that.

One example: 10 years ago I was lose to a 30 ish guy I knew who went back to college, with sole custody of hi 2 kids, 7 and 9 at the time. He got over $400 a month of SNAP. I would offer to bring food when we got together and he said don't bother because he had plenty.
(at the time, I ate well and my monthly grocery bill was under $200)

All those crotch-droppings get free breakfast and lunch at school. Even when school's not in session, so that's only like 11 meals they need for them.

  5. Your dollar number is just the Federal number. Many/most states add state money on top of that too. MN for example adds another $290 for an individual per month. At $500+ per month I can eat pretty good, especially if I'm not working and have free time to cook stuff.
