Look For The Union Label

I keep bumping into this.

Every industry that is mostly offshored also appears to have been unionized prior to its departure.

That sure makes it look like unions caused our industries to leave.

There's a parallel with some factories moving from a state where the union controls the factory to a state where it doesn't.

But no politician appears willing to check on this.

  1. That's where most of the Union dues go...to politicians.

  2. Exactly. The near-collapse of the US auto industry in the 70s and 80s was due more to union costs than lack of production. And the inability of the auto industry to shed incompetent workers or to have workers move from job to job (once a painter always a painter and a painter isn't going to help clean when he/she's not painting.)

We used to have huge textile mills in the South. Gone due to unions.

We used to have a huge merchant fleet, whittled down by union costs.

One of the main reasons for the loss of ship-building capacity, besides the eco-fascists, was union costs.

One of the main reasons for the importation of illegals to work on farms during harvest was the unionization of farm workers.

  3. One of the main reasons for minimum wage laws were to prevent free labor from competing with union labor. There was also a racial aspect.

But yeah, unions are occasionally needed to curb abuses, but when they have government backing, they just extract wealth without adding value.
