The first example of how Universal Metric fails against simply naming the rounds is the number of 8x50mmR rounds where you end up naming them anyways. Austrian, Lebel, Siamese...
But where it really rankles me is .22 Long and .22 Long Rifle.
UM is based on caliber x case length.
.22 Long and .22 Long Rifle are identical if you use UM. 5.6x16mmR. This is because they use the exact same case. .22LR uses a longer, heavier, bullet and more powder. They're not the same.
The really fun one is 7.62. Off the top of my head, there's 7.62x25mm, 7.62x35mm (300 BLK), 7.62x39mm, 7.62x40mm Wilson Tactical, 7.62x51mm, and 7.62x54mmR.
ReplyDeleteAt least you can tell those apart! I beat on the 8x50mmR because I know someone who bought a Siamese Mauser, looked up that it took 8x50mmR and then bought a box of 8x50mmR Lebel. Then he tried 8x50mmR Mannlicher... As far as I know that gun never got fired because he never found Siamese ammo.
DeleteI did find a place selling it just now for $80 a box of 20. On backorder. https://oldsouthammo.com/product/8x50r-siamese-ammunition-new-production
BTW, I just noticed the pun in this post's title. Intended or not, well played!
