He mentions that Smithsonian poster. If I were an actual neo-nazi, I could not have come up with a more racist notion than that punctuality and diligence are white traits, and that it was unreasonable to expect blacks to do them, too. I feel insulted on their behalf.
I came from the former Soviet Union and it was a large effort to unlearn all the self-sabotaging behaviors. I can't imagine trying to do it if everyone in my community were to believe that working hard was a bad thing, and that I were betraying them for doing so.
We need to understand that some aspects of culture are non load-bearing and may vary between sub-cultures. Other aspects are load-bearing, and every culture must obey them. The company I work for employs people of all sorts of backgrounds. The policy on everything is "don't let it affect your work, and I don't care what you do off the clock."
