It Confuses Me

Doing a rewatch of Deadwood.

In the opening scenes it introduces us to Seth Bullock on his last day as a marshal.

He has a prisoner, Clell Watson, who's been sentenced to death for stealing a horse from Byron Sampson and shooting Marshal Bullock.

The Sampson and a mob arrives to lynch the Watson... who's already sentenced to hang...

Um.

Why is Sampson all incensed to push up the execution a few hours?

Why doesn't Bullock just let him have Watson if Sampson is just going to do what the sentence says to do a bit early?
