Perishible?

I once knew how to do calculus...

I have not used it in decades and never outside the classroom.

I suspect that it would take almost as much effort at this point to remember what I learned as it did to learn it in the first place.

Statistics, on the other hand, keeps coming up because of gaming and doing reality checks on GURPS.

Someplace I have my chicken scratching of figuring out the difference between 1d+4 and 2d and why a +4 is promoted to another die in GURPS.  Hint: it's about the mean of a honest die.

  1. You might want to explain what is GURPS? Because I don't have a clue.

    1. GURPS stands for Generic Universal Role Playing System. It's Steve Jackson Game's tabletop role playing rules set.

It's elegantly simple and fiendishly complex at the same time.

It lends itself to many different settings because it uses real world numbers for most of its stuff, that allows you to figure out things that aren't already in the rules or expansion sets.

  3. I used Calculus and Geometry to figure out starship volumes in Traveller (LBB era) and was royally pissed when I found out that the starship layouts published by GDW were radically wrong. I spent an angry summer redesigning every ship to fit the actual volumes.

Past that? Since my 'major' shifted from engineering, which Physics proved the breaking point, to 'history' all that calculus has slipped away.

    1. Yeah, the Type S is way too small. Oh, and the deck layout is unusable!

The Merc cruiser is way too big!

      And so on...

Some where I have new deck plans for every ship that have the correct volume and usable spaces.

    2. Hah, I thought I was the only geek to do that.

The Merc Cruiser and all the small boats just pissed me off. 50 ton cutter is too long, yada yada.

Plus, geez, make the small boats square and maximize the floor plans. They aren't fighters, they're transports. Something like the Eagle from Space 1999 makes more sense than a lot of Traveller designs.
