Obvious Really
There's jokes about giant belt-buckles and the south.
Just about everyone has noticed that smart phones are getting bigger and bigger.
Yesterday I saw someone wearing their giant smart phone on their belt center-front.
Like a giant belt-buckle.

The Camera You Have With You
I noticed that many of the pictures I took in Seattle and take at the range are with the camera built into my Motox.
It's because I have it on me where I don't always have my Canon.
The cameras on phones just keep getting better and better, especially for the snap-shot.

M7 Bayonet
Numbers Compiled from here and here.
US Issue M7's:
Colt made 20,000 green handled ones from 1961. Marked "COLT'S 62316 HARTFORD CONN USA" on the blade.
All other makes have black handles.
Imperial Knife Company / Imperial Schrade Corporation made 30,000 from 1963. Same blade markings as Colt but no markings on the hilt. In 1973 they made an additional 350,000 without blade markings.
Columbus Milpar and Manufacturing Company made some (very few?) with the Colt blade markings and marked "MILPAR USM7" on the hilt; and about 650,000 with unmarked blades from 1964 through 1967.
Conetta Manufacturing Co. made 130,000 marked "CONETTA US M7" on the hilt in the same time period.
Bayer Ord Company made approximately 1.8 million of the things, marked "BOC US M7" on the hilt from 1964 through 1973.
Fraser Manufacturing Company made, perhaps, 40,000 between 1971 and 1973 are marked "FZR US M7".

The senate is not required to do so in a timely fashion.
They could sit on a nominee until the heat death of the universe and not be in violation of their Article II section 2 mandate.
It's "with the advice and consent" of the senate. Refusing to consider the candidate is giving advice (in a blunt way) and denying consent. They've the power to do so.

I got a call from my host, "Thag, where are you?"
"I'm at the Museum of Flight. Why?"
"We just heard someone with a carry permit shot someone at a 7-11..."
It'd happened hours before they'd heard about it or that I'd even left the house.

Like A Tourist
Did the Seattle Experience Music Project thing today because we'd decided not to at the last second last decade when I was out here. Always been curious since.
There was live string music put on by a local music school. Strings playing interpretations of more modern songs is always fun. My hosts appeared to be taking me there under protest, so I didn't just sit and listen.
The big exhibits were Hello Kitty (look impatient taking me to a museum and I can read every SINGLE placard on every exhibit) and a bunch of Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror genre things. Lots of prop weapons, and in person they are SO fake looking. There's a reason it's called Hollywood Magic. Lots of not-for-kids Hello Kitty in there too. Nothing too risque, but still beyond their comprehension.
The shrines to Jimmie Hendrix and Kurt Cobain were kinda creepy and sad.
I also tend to disagree that grunge is the natural culmination of punk; a position taken and advanced by EMP

One neat thing about traveling out west is I can lazily sleep in until noon, get out of bed and find that it's still 0900!

Turns out I've been living in the pacific time zone for decades!
I'm also WAY farther north than I am used, so the extended dawn and twilight compared to lower latitudes is messing with me a little.
Seattle people do NOT know how to fucking drive. Oscillating between five under and the speed limit and random and the timid indecisiveness they use when changing lanes would get someone a road rage response and a firm "You're Number 1!" gesture. Might even get them shot in Miami.
Seattle spring is the same as the depths of Tampa winter; but with wind. Holy Shit! the wind. Reminds me of Germany when the hawk was out. You can go from being a little too warm in the sun to freezing your nards off with a change in wind.
Going to try and find a shooting facility for The Bat and Ofbat (see if you catch that reference!) to get some trigger time. They like shooting, but neglect it. What kind of enabler would I be if I didn't encourage them to go?

On That Science Funding
Remember back before the Big Tobacco lawsuit when any research that showed that smoking didn't instantly give you cancer and/or kill you dead right there it was invalid because the tobacco companies paid for it?

Tipping The Server
It gets pointed out that the official hourly wage for servers is niggardly.
That part is correct.
What often gets missed is that's only a small portion of a server's wages.
Let's take an average lunch hour into account...
Average cost per seat at Chili's is about $20. It takes about an hour for each customer to filter through. Most tables have two customers. Even at 10% tip there's $4 an hour per table. The server is responsible for six tables. We're now at $24 an hour. At 10% tip...
However... Over the course of the day, all six tables aren't in continuous operation. It adds up to being about 50% over the course of the shift, or $12 an hour. Plus $5.03 an hour minimum server wage (Florida)...
$17.03 an hour.
Except that the average tip is actually 18%. So that's $26.63 an hour your server is pulling down.
So when someone tries to make you feel guilty about how much servers make, ask yourself if you make $55k a year. The average server does...

No less august a body than the Center for Disease Control told us that the only way to have less gun violence was for there to be fewer guns.
Except... The research was shoddy when the data could be pried loose and the researchers always needed a court order to release that data (sounding more familiar?).
For fucks sake, you cannot do an honest peer review unless you repeat the experiment. You cannot repeat the experiment without having the original data and methodology.
If two different scientists get wildly different results from the same data, something is wrong. It doesn't even have to be malice, remember cold fusion?
But I remember how controversial Gary Kleck and John Lott's results were about guns and crime. But I also noticed that they made their data available and to date nobody has called them on methodology, just on their conclusion. They showed their work and let you repeat the equations if you'd like. Which the opposition staunchly refused to do, because CONSENSUS!
Guess which set of results got media air time and was never treated for a moment as if it was in doubt...
So when the same media tells me I should stop wasting energy to stop climate change, with Paris in the background of the live report... Well, it wasn't me wasting that energy flying to Paris when the exact same report could have been made from New York where the reporter would have taken a short taxi ride instead of a long flight.
The chief proponents are not living as if they actually believe in it. Check out Al Gore's utility bills some time. Any Hollywood celebrity who talks about this and even owns a share of a private jet is a hypocrite. Just for fun, how much carbon is released from a typical action movie's use of gasoline in the explosions? Check the tax codes for the exemptions to CARB on entertainment... Hey, just like the exemptions the entertainment industry gets for machine guns...

I've caught it enough that I'm out of the Murray Gel-Mann amnesia phase.
Therefore, you cannot use any news outlet as a source for your supporting information.
It has gotten bad enough on some topics that you can nearly predict academic malfeasance from seeing a scientist repeatedly quoted in the mainstream media.
Arthur Kellerman is the oft cited, but completely discredited, "researcher" to support gun control. I've seen his name often and encountered people citing his research who've no idea that his position had been fully refuted. The press still quotes him as if his conclusions were found valid and without controversy.
Michael Mann is often cited for climate change. I stopped paying attention to this one because he's been selling the same solution to disparate problems since the 1970's. I remember the coming ice age. The glaciers would be in Georgia by now if we hadn't ended our reliance on fossil fuels by 1980. Oh wait... Well, if we don't end our reliance on fossil fuels by 1990 global warming will have caused the sea levels to have risen to the point where Florida is an archipelago and all coastal cities would have to be abandoned by 2000. Oh wait...
It's interesting to watch other controversial climate debates pan out. People keep forgetting that it's Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change. Not multiscientific. Government not science. Politics not research. Opinion not facts.
Every single solution suits government, and fascist style governments best.
Too many people don't pay any attention to what's going on at the time and then come in late, armed with what the media reports and what wikipedia now shows. That the scientists who were caught lying, falsifying results and destroying data were exonerated by a panel of the government owned and operated university they worked for... Well "whitewash" is a term you should look up.
The exoneration itself was controversial at the time! Even if we accept there was no wrong-doing... the data is still gone. Without the data set used, the experiment cannot be recreated and repeated and the results cannot be confirmed. Therefore their conclusions are invalid and cannot be cited by anyone claiming that science is settled. Science is all about this sharing of data and confirming experiments by people who disagree with the findings.
The academic fraud committed was the refusal to share this data. It was only when a court order was finally obtained to get the data released, ooops! it had been "inadvertently" deleted. The exoneration was whether there was any maliciousness in the deletion, and none was found by a panel composed by academics from the very same university with a stake in the outcome.
Never mind that anyone claiming scientific consensus as proof... Try to remember that epicycles and luminiferous aether were once valid by consensus. Epicycles even has a parallel with anthropogenic climate change in that a large quasi-governmental organization stated a TRUTH and suppressed research that refuted it.

I remember the coming ice age. The glaciers would be in Georgia by now if we hadn't ended our reliance on fossil fuels by 1980. Oh wait... Well, if we don't end our reliance on fossil fuels by 1990 global warming will have caused the sea levels to have risen to the point where Florida is an archipelago and all coastal cities would have to be abandoned by 2000. Oh wait...
It's interesting to watch other controversial climate debates pan out. People keep forgetting that it's Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change. Not multiscientific. Government not science. Politics not research. Opinion not facts.
Every single solution suits government, and fascist style governments best.
Too many people don't pay any attention to what's going on at the time and then come in late, armed with what the media reports and what wikipedia now shows. That the scientists who were caught lying, falsifying results and destroying data were exonerated by a panel of the government owned and operated university they worked for... Well "whitewash" is a term you should look up.
The exoneration itself was controversial at the time! Even if we accept there was no wrong-doing... the data is still gone. Without the data set used, the experiment cannot be recreated and repeated and the results cannot be confirmed. Therefore their conclusions are invalid and cannot be cited by anyone claiming that science is settled. Science is all about this sharing of data and confirming experiments by people who disagree with the findings.
The academic fraud committed was the refusal to share this data. It was only when a court order was finally obtained to get the data released, ooops! it had been "inadvertently" deleted. The exoneration was whether there was any maliciousness in the deletion, and none was found by a panel composed by academics from the very same university with a stake in the outcome.
Never mind that anyone claiming scientific consensus as proof... Try to remember that epicycles and luminiferous aether were once valid by consensus. Epicycles even has a parallel with anthropogenic climate change in that a large quasi-governmental organization stated a TRUTH and suppressed research that refuted it.

Today is like Christmas in March!
Reader DoninSacto1 gifted me a .25 to add to my collection.
It's a Raven MP-25. The direct antecedent to the Phoenix Raven that I already had. The safety indicates that this is a "late" version of the gun. Collection "Rim-Of-Fire" twenty-fives is almost like collecting Lugers, no?
Alike but for the roll-marks and grip materials. There's an important difference in function, however: The Phoenix made gun has a magazine disconnect.
The magazines are close enough to the same so as to be interchangeable. Phoenix has markings all over it.
