Tricking The Technology

The internet is the phone here.  That's true most everywhere now.

When the power goes out, the internet provider provided box has a battery to make sure we can still call out.

That battery lasts for days.

But the box kills the internet after 15 minutes.

So we have the battery box plugged into a battery backup to make it think the power is still on so we retain internet.

This is paired with UPS's on the routers.

We got almost 2 hours of internet with a dying UPS.

I'd like to upgrade that capability.  I'd love to get 24 hours of up time without touching the generator.

  1. That would require a big battery. How many watts does the router et al draw? For 24 hours you would need something like Jackery power station which is as costly as a generator or possibly rig something with AGM RV batteries since it doesn't have to be portable.

  2. Why don't you just use the phone's Hot Spot?
When our router is having conniptions, I just turn on my Hot Spot and plug in my (T-Mobile unlimited) phone and it's even faster than the fiber here at Rancho Snakebit.

    1. Because, during the power outage, the phones were showing connected to 5G, but weren't connecting. If you found a spot where it'd display 4G, you had internet again.

The router, while powered, had a connection the entire time. We even tested when Marv brought his cute little generator over to let us charge the cold in the fridges.
