The Boy's psychiatrist ordered a round of genetic testing for him.
She did a bad job of explaining why, but we have the results in and...
It was a allele compatibility test with certain drugs and it actually explains a lot of observed things.
What it showed is that some drugs don't work like they're supposed to work with certain genetic markers. Some as bad as having the opposite effect as expected.
This is particularly true of sedatives and The Boy.
The good news is that it also identifies drugs that should work correctly with his genetic markers.
It's kind of neat we're learning enough about this stuff to be able to tailor a cocktail just for one person.
I am a retired nurse that is also a diabetic. I use an Insulin pump that works very well to keep my glucose levels where I have a consistent A1C of 6.8 to 7.1 range, a good compliance. They are doing away with pumps to use injectable insulins and GLP1s like Victoza, Ozempic and others. I have been prescribed and all of them cause me extreme stomach and abdominal cramping and some have caused leg cramping and I can't seem to convince my endocrinologist that I may be allergic to them and have requested genetic testing to detect the kind of anomaly that I possess. With the sedative issue, is "The Boy's" a red head? I am, and we have a different reaction to sedatives and analgesics. It takes generally a larger dose to have the desired effect and we experience pain and trauma different than normal people, due to the genes that code for fair skin and hardheadedness. Doctors can't seem to understand that in the shuffle of genes that we all are different and while most drugs are tailored to the mean populations that there are outliers and we need to have these types of tests to target the therapies and medications that don't work or make a condition worse.
ReplyDeleteThe Boy has brown hair. Typical admixture American otherwise.
DeleteEarly speculation is him being 1/4 Blackfoot and American Indians being nearly insanely adverse to getting genetic testing done. So adverse that Harvey, being 1/2 Blackfoot, comes up as "Scottish" on 23-And-Me with notes that much of her heritage is "unknown, possibly American Indian or Asian."
You might consider Ancestry.com's genetic testing if you haven't already done it. They've got a pretty good reputation as far as accuracy goes and they have a big geneological database to correllate with.

One of these days, I may go kicking and screaming to get a genetic screening to see why none of the supposed "sure-thing" painkillers (including STRONG opioids) work for me. I've had numerous orthopedic surgeries over the last couple of decades and they've all had less-than-optimal outcomes soley because I can't find any painkillers that will allow me to "break" the scar tissue as its forming, post-op. Maybe I'm just not "man enough" to endure someone grabbing my foot and literally ripping apart the scar tissue in my knees without anesthesia? 🤔
