There's a thread on arfcom that's, no shit, debating which flip-up back-up-iron-sight is best.
Optics have gotten to the point that back-up irons are nugatory.
And I say that as a GM who really WANTS to fuck over a player counting on that optic!
We're to the point where the best BUIS is the one that weighs the least and takes up the least space.
All the rear sights put the same little hole in the same place it would be if the AR had a carry handle.
The front sights literally use an M16A2 front sight post and put it where it'd be if there was a normal front sight base.
Nugatory!
A case can be made for skipping them altogether.
I can't, quite, bring myself to skip having irons on a "fighting" rifle.
If the optics get broken or otherwise unusable, you'll bless the foresight of those who equipped you with iron sights.

That's kind of why I have irons on my guns still. Without irons that'd be game over until the scope was replaced and in a time of needful, that'd mean Kentucky windage.
On one of my rifles, I have one of those red dots that took a shotgun blast during testing and survived. I have BUIS (the el-cheapo Magpul plastic ones), but I don't expect there to be a situation where the red dot dies but the plastic sight survives. It's just a nice "just in case" that cost $20 and less than an ounce of weight.

Most anything that is gonna dead line an ACOG or M68 is going to deadline the rifle it is mounted on; if not the shooter behind it.
