The F-35 is all messed up. It's out of sequence.
Next in line should have been F-24.
F-35A is the conventional take-off and landing version. F-35B is the VTOL version. F-35C is the carrier version.
When a fixed wing can land vertically, it gets a V in the designation. AV-8A and AV-8B and V-22 (Harriers and Osprey). The VTOL version should be FV-24B!
Why have a system of naming if you aren't gonna use it?
Oh, the 35 is in sequence if you use the X progression. F-35 comes out of the X-35 project. That was supposed to be, like F-22A, a tech demonstration with one bidder focusing on one aspect with the other focusing on another. Pity the demo turned into a fly-off and the military changed the specs to favor the aspects focused on by Lockeed-Martin.
