You might note that, in recent pics, my Krag doesn't have the rear peep sight I talked about installing a while ago.
Bubba, while he did a good job converting a rifle to a deer-slaying carbine, used a commercial front and rear sight set up.
The Williams sight assumes you've still got the issue military front sight, which is much taller than any commercial blade.
The HEL-E4A project is languishing because of a lack of lathe and skill to work said lathe.
I can hire both, but I'd need to seriously clean up my drawings so that I get what I want instead of what the machinist thinks I want from the drawings I have now.
The semi-auto STEN idea got nuked by the utter lack of 922r compliance parts for an otherwise very doable project from fairly available and affordable parts.

Day One Of 41Fpocalypse
The old rules are dead, long live the new rules.
Which if NFA had an NRA would be overturned because BATFE broke the rules promulgation rules several times.
I'm finding that I have an urge to submit under the new rules just to show that it didn't stop me. That I am not dissuaded from getting new NFA stuff.
The problem is what to do?
A suppressor in 6.8?
Saw off a Winchester Model 12?
Win the lottery and get an MG?
Go back to building the STEN SBR semi?

Machine Shop
Talked to a former boss of mine.
He's a Type 7 FFL and SOT and has a complete shop for the making of guns.
Using his facilities to make the STEN makes it less ghosty, but a lot more likely.
He suggested that there might even be a legal way for his shop to not officially have made the gun, he's checking.
I think I have a viable way to make it a closed bolt semi-auto.
The Mk 2 STEN has a selector switch.
In semi there's a disconnector that catches the bolt to the rear after one shot and releases it against the sear when the trigger is reset. It occurs to me that this system can grab the tail of a striker instead of the whole bolt. It shouldn't take too much effort to make sure the selector does nothing, making it semi-auto only. My sear is going to be farther forward than the historical gun and the ID of the receiver tube too small for a vintage bolt to fit.
This is exciting stuff!

A Bit Of A Snag
The STEN project has hit a snag.
I do not possess a high school metal shop.
There's a scarcity of rental machine shops for some reason.
There's an abundance of machine ships I can hire to do work, but damn few (none) that will let me use the machines. My closest friend with the tooling is in North Carolina.
Then there's the parkerization tank.
About the only thing I have available locally is the welder.
I has the sads about this project because it's going to cost a lot to buy the tools to make the tools to make the parts.
That kind of makes it less viable than (yet) another AR.

Working On It
Took the pdf drawings of the STEN and entered them into AutoCAD.
Started taking measurements there.
I stand by my position that there's nothing on a STEN that cannot be made in a high school metal shop.
I modify that position with... this is not a real STEN if it's semi-auto.
Converting it to closed bolt semi-automatic operation might take a bit more doing, especially keeping an eye on making sure it cannot take any full-auto parts.
If ATF didn't consider open bolt, fixed firing pin guns illegal machine guns, then this would be simple. Lock the selector in the semi position and drive on!
The next nut to consider is that while I am certainly allowed to make my own gun for personal use without telling the ATF (or any other government entity in Florida) there might be a bit of sticky wicket concerning design approval. I am still researching that. It could merely be something that you need to do if you're making a gun from a parts kit that used to be an MG rather than entirely from scratch.
And there's nothing in making one from scratch that requires I don't use Indianapolis Ordnance's semi-kit if I am faithful with the other dimensions.
Plus... Since this will have to have a 16" barrel, I think that the handguard should be extended out to the muzzle so that it looks like the suppressor from a STEN Mk IIS. That'd be cool, wouldn't it?
I think it might also be a good idea to look at the dimensions for a Colt 9mm AR magazine, since they're a lot more available than STEN and generally regarded as more reliable.
