You Have A Right To _Say_ It Not *DO* It

I have said before that you have every right to be a hateful racist.  You have no right to act on your hate.

I prefer bigots to be open and honest about it so that I can avoid them better.

Them being open and honest about it also means that when they act on their hate, it becomes a sentence enhancer.

Case in point.

Calling someone a filthy Jew is being very rude and obnoxious; but it's probably protected speech.

Assaulting someone after calling them a filthy Jew is a hate crime.

And, yes, you don't have to actually touch someone to commit assault!

Once you've articulated an actionable threat that appears to be imminent, you're assaulting.

And you're lucky if your chosen victim is armed and declines to shoot you.

It's noteworthy that this happened in Florida and the actual victim is home, safe, with their family and the (alleged) perpetrator is behind bars without bail.

How Many Of These Myths Are There?

Widner's did an article about how shooting out the tires doesn't work like Hollywood, and thus not like how most people think it should.

Linky dinky.

Anyone who's watched a live cop show has seen how long it takes spike strips to flatten a tire and seen that it will still run on the rims for a bit.

But the rims don't give a lot of traction or control...

Shooting out the tires could cause a car to do far more damage than the driver is trying to inflict.

Guntube Lawyers

I am getting sick of all the people on our side of the gun debate constantly coming up with new ideas to use in court against us.

Thankfully, it seems that what they've come up with is almost entirely theoretical still.

But the current round of speculation is about what training you've had and if your lawyer is being paid by some form of CCW insurance.

Because those things indicate "planning" to create a "self-defense" situation where you get to shoot someone.

Oh, and not getting training indicates gross irresponsibility and negligence.

There's no way out of the process as punishment.

Especially since it appears that the ccw insurers are essentially scams because of all the exit clauses built into the contract that lets them not pay for what you think you hired them to pay.

Thanks Kitties

One of the felines, probably Shadow, moved the home-defense carbine in it's ready rack and managed to turn on the light sometime today.

Thankfully I check it very frequently.

New batts installed and all is well.

Good To Know

"If you’re driving on one of those streets and a mob comes and surrounds your vehicle and threatens you, you have a right to flee for your safety, and so if you drive off and you hit one of these people, that’s their fault for impinging on you.  You don’t have to sit there and just be a sitting duck and let the mob grab you out of your car and drag you through the streets.  You have a right to defend yourself in Florida."

Home And Looter Defence

Brenda and Valentine are the hurricane defense pair.

Brenda is handier, but Valentine has that extra couple feet per second and 5x magnification.

One is better at looters, the other better in the immediate AO.

I'm set for what comes, even if it's not as bad as originally feared in my AO.

Of course, if REAL looting happens, if I can see it, I can pretty much hit it.

Peace be upon Jack O'Connor.

Now Charge Him

I remember back 6 years ago when someone who was actually threatening someone got their ass killed and the person who killed them got convicted over it because the very slight repositioning of their feet didn't constitute a credible threat.

Former Deputy Duran used the exact same claim for using lethal force as convicted felon Drejka when shooting Airman Fortson.

Duran has been fired by the Okaloosa Sheriff's Dept for violating procedures.

This opens the door for him to be charged and I think, to be consistent, that his justification for use of force be dismissed just as Mr Drejka's was.

PS: Airman Fortson's posture was not threatening in the interaction that led to his death.  McGlockton was squared up to fight.  They aren't equivalent at all.  I feel like I needed to amend the post to make my snark a bit clearer.

Rack The Slide

It occurs to me that there's a better noise than pumping the shotty to make the home invader shit themselves.

The sound that occurs from pulling the trigger.

Prescription Med Shortage

I was reading an article about how many common medications are currently in short supply and how it's because China and India still have not bounced back from the Wu Ping Cough.

Well, by jingo!

I think it's high time we acknowledge that off-shoring all of these industries is a shitty long term plan and become industrious again.

Some judicious tinkering of minimum wage and union eligibility laws might even make such moves profitable.  We can even establish some needs based tests on welfare assistance and get some able bodied folks to working who aren't right now.

Or they can starve, I'm fine with that.

Hell, we can even incentivize these new workers with student loan carrots.  Getting these jobs and industries back home will probably more than offset the costs from forgiving the loans by getting these debtors to work and paying some taxes; and having money to spend on something besides their loan and (just perhaps) spending that money on products made by the company your boomer ass works for.

Oh, and geld the EPA bullshit for this national defense necessary industry.

It would work, that's why it will never be done.

Hearing Pretection

One "nice" thing about wearing earplugs to get to sleep is I've already got my hearing protection in case of a break in.

The down side is I will likely sleep right through the break in and hear Harvey repelling boarders first.

You Should Watch It For Yourself

There's been a lot of flipping out from the usual people about Kayla Denker's video with an AR.

A video that got her butt fired from the Forest Service.

It's got a lot less to do with her being trans than the Biden administration not liking guns.

It's not hard to find, but I won't give a link to the places I found it.

The "advocating violence" is almost literally a "fuck around and find out" message to people who would physically attack transgender folks.

If you've never articulated you'd do violence on someone in response to their violence, then go ahead and condemn her "advocacy".

For the rest of us gun owners, she's stating something we're staunchly supporting.

"Don't start none, won't be none."

I dunno about y'all, but I support the idea that if someone tries to kill you, you should kill them right back.

Regardless of color, creed, sex, gender, hairstyle, body fat index, being a Chevy person...

She's not advocating initiating the violence, like Antifa and Bureau of Land Management Black Lives Matter.

And if someone initiates violence against you, shoot them right back regardless of their color, creed, sex, gender, hairstyle, body fat index, being a Ford person...

Never Bring A Shovel To A Gunfight

Also, don't fuck with a mother protecting her kids.

Bad plan.

Sounds like a good shoot at this point.

Kudos to Mom!

What Good Can Come Of It

In Houston a robber got deaded by a customer at a taqueria.

Apparently, after the shoot, everyone just left.

Including the hero who saved the taxpayers a lot of money finding, convicting and caring for the deceased criminal.  Probably saving society from years of criminal activity in the bargain.

Well, the cops wanna have a chat with the hero of the day.

I'm sitting here wondering what good can come of talking to the cops?

I suspect that they want to arrest the shooter because they spotted some subtle violation of the self defence rules which are only clear when watching the situation from a different angle than the shooter and while safe in a climate controlled office building.

Because, Gods forbid, that someone who clears the gene pool of the kind of filth that robs a restaurant and its patrons should be spared the process-is-the-punishment criminal charges from shooting such scum.

I will not be shocked to find that the deceased has a long history of arrests and not terribly arduous jail sentences.

Which begs the question:

What good is the criminal justice system if it barely slows down such scum?

We do know that the deceased will never rob anyone ever again.

Can the cops make such a promise?

Even more germane; will punishing the shooter prevent future robberies of taquerias?

But It Wasn't A Gun

Ames, Iowa is the home of Iowa State University.

That means there's fraternities and football players.

Way back in the depths of time, before playing D&D was OK for The Beautiful People® to play and before the term "cosplay" had mainstreamed...

If you were dressed in your persona for the Society of Creative Anachronisms and walking across campus in the wee hours during VIESHA, you might just be accosted by drunken versions of the Frat-Rat or Sportsballer.

Remember when I mentioned asymmetric response?

A wakizashi, while not a gun, is definitely more blade than three drunk jocks want to deal with at 3am.

Ames, Iowa, being the home of ISU, is also not a place where you go to the cops afterwards and explain how you brandished a sword at three assailants while on campus.

The Iowa State Police (not to be confused with the Iowa State Patrol) have a policy of punishing the closest person they think is breaking the rules and then ignoring everyone out of immediate reach.

Carrying a short sword on campus is a violation of their knife rules.

So one tends to get mum about such incidences.

Won't Do That Again

Sucker puncher gets deaded video.

This is almost definitely an illegal shoot.

But I cannot make myself say it was an immoral one.

I'm of the opinion that if you assault someone, you've got anything they can deliver coming back at you and this legal nicety of, "you can't shoot back if they stop hitting you," is exactly a legal nicety.

It's not a moral obligation.

I think we should begin making the killing of animals who make assaults of this nature legal again.

We can also make it legal to shoot thieves fleeing your house in the back too.

This Wouldn't Be True In Some Places

No charges for an Ohio father who killed his daughter's ex while said ex was breaking down the front door.

Good shoot.

I love the neighbor who's all like, "he doesn't have a gun," when it doesn't matter.

To paraphrase the great Western philosopher William Munny, "Well, he should have armed himself if he's going to try breaking down my door."

Places with castle doctrine don't care.

But that's not every place.  Know your local laws!

They Always Say...

The anti-gunners are always on about how us gun owners will change our tune when more black people get guns.

Nope.  I have no problem with this guy.

Well, some small details could be better.

The perp could have been hit.  Get to the range Mr Smith!

And stop keeping guns in your truck!  Especially if you can't hit the perp who stole it a moment ago.

I'd also like to suggest a red-dot or other illuminated optic so you can better tell where your rifle is pointed.  Irons suck in the dark.

Oh No!

A buddy who's been talking about getting a gun for home defense for a LONG LONG time called about the topic again yesterday.

His wife has finally signed off on the idea of having a gun in the house and he starts asking me about shotguns.

Specifically no-stock, pistol-grip models.

This will be his first, ever, gun.  He's not a shooter and didn't grow up in a household that had guns in it.

I tried to be gentle.

Considering that my home defense (Harvey's too) gun is an AR, I think you can tell what my opinion of using a shotgun in that role is.

The AR is lighter and handier, uses smaller and lighter ammunition and is easier to reload if you need to.  It's also more precise.

I pointed him at Palmetto State Armory's web page and he can get a complete AR for under $500 less mags and ammo.

I tried to explain that an AR is just plain easier to shoot and the shotguns he's linking me to on Gunbroker aren't really novice guns.  Sure, they look "cool" but they're harder to use.

I even went so far as to say that if he must have a shotgun for home defense, then get one with a stock!

He was surprised to hear that you still have to aim a shotgun.

I expect a few more calls and a trip to the range before he makes a decision.

PS: He's so new to this he didn't even realize that a couple ways he suggested we purchase the AR are flat illegal.  Real live people are in jail for it illegal stuff.

I explained that too.
