I read that "officials" at weigh stations are asking drivers to read passages from 1st grade books.
Harvey relayed some reactions from her liberal friends and it was typical "they're being racist!" bullshit.
But something occurs to me.
A literate Mexican driver without any English could bluff their way through that book.
The letters and pronunciation rules aren't that different between Spanish and English.
This isn't a nationality filter.
This is a literacy filter.
If the driver cannot read, how much are they missing?
How are they maintaining their manifests? Their logs?
Or any of the other documents that a trucker needs?
Unmentioned in all the liberal outrage is the statutory requirement that a CDL holder must be “proficient in the English language”.
ReplyDeleteThere’s a lot to unpack here, but about 10-15 years ago, many/most states began to allow “accredited” truck driving schools to administer the state’s CDL exam. Accreditation, and eligibility for federal funds like Pell grants etc depend on high passing rates… ergo ipso facto etc, and the average interstate truck stop now resembles the general assembly of the United Nations, with worse hygiene.
The schools have no interest in ensuring proficient drivers, just keep them passing and keep those dollars flowing.
We could replace liberals with a cuckoo clock that says, instead of "Cuckoo! Cuckoo!" nothing but "Racists! Racists!" and nobody would notice the difference. And the clock would at least be right twice a day at least.
