Dark can also mean "unseen" or "unobserved".  Google even lists "hidden from knowledge; mysterious." under definition #1!

I first became aware of this use of the word from the phrase, "deepest darkest Africa."  Being a naive little waif, I thought that meant that was where the most black people lived.  It just meant unexplored by Europeans.

Yes, it's an archaic form of the word, but it has NEVER meant that the far side of the moon never got any sunlight.
