F-111B on downwind. |
"There is not enough thrust in all Christendom to make a fighter out of that airplane." Adm Tom Connolly.
It's not as bad as all that, but it's still a pig. I've yet to successfully bring it back aboard the boat. It just will not bleed off airspeed, and I suspect the model has the hook done wrong and it's not catching the wires.
It made a hell of a high-speed, low-level penetrator though, didn't it?
ReplyDeleteI've read lots of stories of the RAAF flying them at extreme low-level, "hard-hard" terrain following during various war-games, and doing a mighty fine job.
The Air Force got the plane they were after from the beginning. The Aussies' F-111C is what they "settled" for after the TSR.2 was cancelled; and was exactly what they wanted as well.
ReplyDeleteThe F-111B the other hand... Not what the Navy asked for at all.
