I Know I Didn't Read It

On page 20 of the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook is the following concerning Clerics: "This class of character bears a certain resemblance to religious orders of knighthood of medieval times."

That sounds a lot more like a Templar or a Hospitaller than a priest!

But we always played them as priests back when.

The Paladin was whom we played like a Templar or Hospitaller.

I am less and less certain we actually played AD&D and were just using a D&Desque home brew the whole time.

  1. While I haven't played AD&D for ages, my recollection matches yours. The prohibition of edged weapons for clerics reinforced their position as priestly spell casters rather than front line fighters while Paladins were the warrior monster, sword and all
