Getting into Valhalla is not as simple as dying in combat.
There's additional requirements.
Most important is allowing Your Lord and Savior, Odin, into your heart.
Positions in Valhalla are only open to someone who adheres to the Norse religion.
Next, die in combat.
Actually, die valorously in combat.
Because the last step is to be chosen by the Valkyrie.
They're looking for HEROES! Not everyday soldiers.
To recap:
1. Be of the Norse religion.
2. Die a heroic death in battle.
3. Have your death be noticed by the Valkyrie.
4. Be chosen by the Valkyrie as worthy of a seat in Valhalla.
Now you know what you have to do!
If you want a fun Norse novel, try Lester Del Rey's Day of the Giants. It has both fantasy and sf elements, and doesn't take itself too seriously.
ReplyDeleteVery good point.
ReplyDeleteBut what are the entrance requirements for Bilskirnir, Thor's Hall, which is also stock full of warriors?
All the Norse gods have halls that are filled with their 'rescues.' Well, except for Loki, as he's chained to a rock having poison from snakes, including the Midgard Serpent, drip on him and burn him.
All the halls require Norse worsip, but except for Valhalla, there's not a lot of info out there.
