The two affiliates that got Kimmel pulled in the first place, Sinclair and Nexstar, have decided to continue preempting the show.
That's close to 70 stations that aren't carrying the show and a significant number of the total channels that could.
Advertisers are taking note.
Rumor has it that the number of eyes on the streaming service is very low, and advertisers had already noticed.
The show was probably doomed before he got stupid(er).
Frankly none of the current late night hosts are very funny. No one on the level of Letterman or Leno, let alone Carson. Hell, none of them are even as funny as Conan was and that is a pretty low bar. But Kimmel is pretty much the worst of the bunch, even worse than Colbert and much worse than Fallon. The few times when I have seen a brief bit of those shows before switching off to something else, I'm just not impressed by any of them. One thing I did notice is that EVERY substitute for KImmel when he was on vacation was considerably less awful. Seriously when guest hosts are better, that should be a sign. Kimmel's whole schtick the past several years has just been about how much he hates Trump, and unless you've got severe TDS, that gets old real quick. Even if you're not a huge Trump fan, which I'm not. I'm just not a hater. And the one note, tired repetitive "jokes" just get boring and negative. There are a lot of actually funny thngs going on in the world. I'm not sure that the "late night/tonight show" format isn't doomed in general like the dinosaurs anyway. None of the networks have really great ratings in those time slots.
ReplyDeleteHere's another thing -- if they were censoring/firing Kimmel to appease Trump, they'd probably just replace him as the host. It isn't like they haven't replaced hosts before. But it is more likely they are just gong to cancel the show entirely and not replace it with another same format show.
