A modern, electronically controlled, automatic transmission is objectively better than a manual.
Turbochargers, which use waste energy from the exhaust to work, are more efficient than a supercharger, which puts drag on the crankshaft to work.
But a stick is still cooler than a slushbox and a supercharger is cooler than a turbo (literally as well).
Hot rodding is chock-a-block full of impractical but neat things.
There's also general applications versus specific applications. Drag racers still use superchargers because the immediate power is more important. Drag racing is also the rationale for drive axle tires with tall sidewalls instead of "modern" low profile tires, which optimize for turning rather than launching.
ReplyDeleteManual transmissions are still aesthetic rather than performance, since in any class that allows it dragsters use some form of automatic shifting. Three pedals is a great way to distance yourself from "Boomer Rods"
