Florida Registration

Florida, by law, has no gun registration.

But the media often refers to registered owners.

Occasionally, they mention the illegal possessor was a different person from the registered owner.

Often they mention the "registered owner" by name.

I've been mentioning this for a few years.

Kids, if they can tell whose gun it is in less than 24 hours and get that information to the press in that same time period:  You have defacto gun registration.

Fla. Stat. § 790.335(2) is meaningless.

Time to have an unproductive conversation with my state legislators.

  1. I imagine if the gun was stolen that a police report was made, even if only for insurance purposes.
I also imagine that said police report contains the description and serial number of the stolen firearm.
Could it be that the information published was extracted from THOSE reports rather than a firearm registry?

    1. That should be phrased as, "A trace showed that the gun was stolen," not "the suspect was not the registered owner of the firearm."

They're saying it this particular way for a reason and I don't know what it is.

    2. You are completely correct.

I get into so much strife with my wife when I respond to what she SAID rather than what she MEANT, so with that experience, I generally assume that news reports are more of the same.

I first assume that the article is written by someone whose THIRD language is English, and that he was dropped on his head as a child - repeatedly. Alternately it could be deliberate obfuscation.

Only then do I try and parse for the real story. :)
