“AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up Internet. This service will no longer be available in AOL plans. As a result, on September 30, 2025 this service and the associated software, the AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser, which are optimized for older operating systems and dial-up internet connections, will be discontinued.”

End Of An Era
I think they've been going downhill since they discontinued their free floppy disk service, but what do I know.

I think everyone back in the day had an AOL account.
ReplyDeleteWhen Verizon sold us to Frontier, our verizon.net email addresses became AOL addresses.
DeleteI never used AOL. And I haven't used a modem since 2009. A place I worked used modems to send health insurance claims, but after I left that place I've never dealt with them again. I got DSL around 1997 and basically never looked back on dialup at home. The land line service I have now is VOIP, and that's not really good to use with a modem anyway. I think I still have a modem or two around somewhere but I'd have to dig in boxes of stuff in storage to find one.

I sidestepped AOL and used MSN dial up for a while. Then I had the paradoxical setup of a laptop with WiFi hooked up to a dial up router before finally getting DSL. I last used modems at work to manage HVAC gear, before they went to Ethernet
