Slave reparations.
Especially so since approximately 360,000 men paid the fullest price to end slavery.
In my mind the former slaves owe them for the gift of freedom. From what I read, it was appreciated by everyone who'd actually been a slave.
Are there any still alive?
What we are talking about when we are talking about slave reparations are really Jim Crow reparations!
The injustice of slavery was made good by the sacrifices of the Civil War. Paid in full.
Jim Crow started after the war. Those laws are why we have a 14th and 15th amendments.
What you need to ask yourself is, what party passed all those laws and have they made amends? Have they even apologized? Didn't they honor an unrepentant Klansman when he died AFTER DECADES OF BEING IN OFFICE?
Or did they blame someone else?
This is why I am angry about the idea. It wasn't me who harmed the descendants of slaves. I did not vote for or support the people who did and do. But it will sure as hell be me who's going to be paying for it, isn't it? I don't like blame shifting. I don't like the innocent being punished. I don't believe that punishing me for the sins of my ancestors is just, for the same reason that enslaving someone because their ancestors were slaves is unjust.
I also don't like the precedent. If this flies, how long before we have woman's reparations? Gay reparations? Irish reparations? Indian? Jewish? Mormon? The guilty got away and imposing an injustice on the innocent is nothing more than a new injustice. Two wrongs do not make a right.
EDIT:
I am a firm believer in the premise that if you are going to punish me for something I have not done; I have nothing to lose by doing the thing I have been punished for. I have to wonder how many racists are so because they'd been treated so. The phenomenon is real, I've known several people who didn't care about homosexuals until they'd been punished for "gay bashing"; they sure as hell care now, and not in a pro-gay way.
If you are out to punish someone for injustice, make certain you get the guilty. Punishing the innocent just gets you resentment and breeds more of what you are trying to stop.

Why? Is Slavery A Problem There?
I am wondering why.
I just double checked and California was a free state from the beginning and stayed with The Union for the Civil War.
Why would California have a need to compensate slaves for their servitude?
Unless we're talking about the ungrateful descendants of former slaves who took the gift of freedom and...
Did nothing with it.
Unless we're talking about the real effects from discrimination stemming from Jim Crow laws.
But, again, why would California need to have reparations for Jim Crow laws they never instituted.
Jim Crow laws are a Southern Democrat thing.
But even Jim Crow reparations are bullshit.
Since the Civil Rights Act dozens of special carve outs have been made for people of color to give them a leg up against Evol Whitey to no avail.
Maybe there'd be a point talking about reparations from Equal Opportunity and the corrosive effect it's had on people of color. But if we start talking about reparations for the harm done by EO, we're going to be paying out to white people harmed by losing the job to an under-qualified candidate who happened to have darker skin.

Slavery Repatriations
In reality slavery was paid, in full, in blood by about 360,000 Union soldiers. Soldiers whom were predominantly white and nearly exclusively male.
I've done the math about what the weregild would be for them. Every black person in America would owe about $331k to pay that debt at the current average wrongful death settlement rate.
In addition to fighting and dying to end slavery, it was codified by the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments. Amendments which made the former slaves citizens in addition to making them free.
What reparations are talking about is Jim Crow.
Once again, I find that I'm not to blame.
Jim Crow Laws were the creation of one party, and it's not the Party of Lincoln.
There's rafts of laws from the 1960's that have addressed those laws.
But the race baiters want a cash settlement instead?
Fine.
We'll just roll back all those laws and amendments and cut y'all checks.
Better spend it quick. You're not voting next election. Not that you could afford it or pass the tests that are re-implemented.
Civil rights? Oh, those aren't part of the constitution for you anymore. Missing the 14th yet?

Slave Reparations Again
The reparation was paid in 1865, in blood, by over 360,000 WHITE men who fought to free blacks from the evil of chattel slavery.
White men, again, went on to pass three amendments to The Constitution to address the issue and to force the people who didn't get the message that henceforth blacks were people too.
The UN says the US owes blacks reparations...
And once again we're not talking about slavery but Jim Crow.
Once again I know who owes for that, and it's not me. Again.
Most of the people who're responsible died without being punished.
I reject, again, the idea that I can inherit the guilt of others and be punished for actions I did not take or support.
Racism is an evil this nation has a long history with, but inherited guilt is how you perpetuate it not how you alleviate it.

Dear Mr Shabazz
Your solution to your distant, African, ancestors being sold into slavery by another African people is reparations in the form of handing you Florida in its entire exclusively for blacks.
Since you bring up reparations, OK, let's have them.
You and your kind owe 360,222 lives to us white people.
Those people died to emancipate your ancestors from slavery.
They paid the ultimate price to give you the precious gift of freedom.
What are you doing with that gift, you ingrate?
Demanding more?
Are you saying The South didn't pay?
The history of Reconstruction says otherwise.
But the idea of creating a homeland for black people where they can live and thrive without the influence of Evol Whitey has been done before.
It's called Liberia.
But let us return to your bill, Mr Shabazz.
Using the national average of $37,050,000.00 for a wrongful death settlement times the number of lives sacrificed we get $13,346,225,100,000.00.
Yes, Mr Shabazz, that's more than thirteen trillion US dollars. Got that on you?
I will even be FAIR about it and not even apply 153 years of compound interest to the equation.
So until you've paid off the weregeld on 360,222 Union soldiers lives, you can just go fuck off about demanding anything from anyone else.

Consider The Sacrifice That Made You Free Before You Demand I Pay Your Bills. UPDATED
Barak Hussein Obama, NPR 2001. http://www.vinceautmorire.mu.nu/images/od-010118.ram
Update to bring the newbs up to speed: There has been a movement inside the civil rights movement for quite a long time that believes that because their grandparents were once slaves that society at large, especially white people, owe them financial compensation for "their" suffering.
Something I want to address about his "grievance": Us white folk paid in blood to free y'all black folk. Paid more than can ever be repaid, just so you can be free. We don't owe you anything. If anything, you owe us for fighting and dying for that freedom. We didn't ask to be repaid for the service we rendered unto you, we did it because we thought it was the right thing to do. For you to demand payment now after the sacrifices made for you? How dare you, sir? How dare you?
If you were not slaves, then you would be in Africa. Checked the politics there?
If predominately white men had not fought and died to grant you freedom, you would still be enslaved. Be grateful, take the gift go forth and prosper!
Barry, your father was not the descendant of American Slaves, nor are you. You don't get to put on that mantle. It's not your heritage.
UPDATE
Oh, by the way, the Service Oath I took way back in 1987: I, (McThag), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Support and defend the Constitution of the United States Barry. That document you are finding in your way. Shall I put you in the foreign or domestic category? We had classes on lawful orders and several of us (not me at the time) asked about what would happen if the President issued an unlawful order. "Unlawful is unlawful, and the order does not have to be obeyed," is what the Drill Sergeant told us.

White Guilt
Inherited slavery is WRONG! Because the debt that landed the father in slavery should not be transferred to the son. That assumes that the father was justly enslaved (not as far fetched as it first appears, think about it).
Blacks from Africa, for the most part, were enslaved for losing some local war. Enslavement was part of losing these things. Often the slave's children were raised as part of the conquering tribe, thus not slaves. When they got here though, their kids became slaves, and their kids, and their kids ad nauseum. That's how chattel slavery works.
If chattel slavery is wrong because the children who have done nothing to deserve being enslaved then blaming me for the oppression of blacks when I have never owned a slave is also wrong; regardless of whether gramps owned thousands. And while "freeing the slaves" was not why the Union government fought the war, it WAS the recruiting slogan that got many to join and fight. The debt to the slaves was paid in blood, by white men mostly. I guess if you don't consider that enough we can put you back into chains because I certainly don't wanna pay as much as the people who freed your ancestor paid.
It's even more galling to me that the descendants of slaves, who have never been slaves themselves, demand that I, who have never owned a slave, pay for the crimes of my forebears against their forebears. Never mind that my forebears didn't get here until 1873 on my Dad's side and 1924 on my Mom's. Wasn't there, didn't do it are positive defenses!
I have some of the same issues with the fixes being as bad as the original wrong with the wealth that was stolen from WW2 Jews. The people who own it now are very unlikely to be the person who stole it. The heirs of the original owner are demanding that the current possessor fork it over regardless of how it came into their possession. I am sorry the thieves got away with your stuff, but they paid in blood for the theft (remember that whole WW2 thing?). Want us to put Nazi Germany back so you can go through their courts? Any takers? Anyone?
The war crimes trials in Israel are another thing that bugs me. Isreal did not exist until 1947. That nation trying nazis for crimes committed in 1939-1945 seems ex post factum to me. Prior to 1947 it was impossible to break Israeli law because Israel did not exist. The war criminals also did not break Nazi German laws when they committed their "crimes". I do not think they should have gone unpunished for their deeds, just that the wrong government entity was doing the trial.

Reaction
The important thing is that the shameful practice has stopped.
The speaking of it no more portion is an acknowledgement that stopping was admirable, but since the practice was shameful we may not be proud.
A problem has developed with our coping mechanism.
One group who was shamefully treated is not really part of our culture, and do not want to be fully part of it. They will not shut up about it.
They repeatedly bring up the shame, over and over. They never mention that the activity has ended. They never mention the sacrifice in blood made to right the principle wrong. They never mention the ethnicity (notice I don't say race?) of the people who worked at fixing the remaining injustices.
It was something that they could not fix themselves because they were powerless to do so. It was fixed because it became known as being wrong and the people in power decided to end the shameful practices.
What the groups representing the recently liberated ethnic group are doing is making the majority who did the hard lifting on their behalf regret their decision to do so.
The shutting up about it is not asking for thanks, but surely we deserved better than the blood dancing ethnic baiting rent seeking behavior we are getting.
We most certainly could have left you in chains. It was an option on the table. Ironically they can thank the Confederate States for firing on Fort Sumter for taking it off the table.
Speaking of that war, do any of the racist bastards dancing the blood this past week think they would have been better off if the 365,000 men who died to free them had refused to fight?
Since you've got my hackles up "gentlemen" I think it's time we started talking about reparations. What's the weregild on a Union soldier with 151 years of interest?

Process
When I post, I assume that you've read all the preceding material and remember it. Mostly, because I remember it.
When something doesn't make any damn sense, it's likely a continuation of an earlier post. Or it really doesn't make any damn sense and it's just steam escaping.
This blog's primary purpose is to keep me off the local water tower. Demanding I prove my position to your satisfaction will not lead to that end.
If you have enough time to research every little thing I misspoke or got wrong, then you certainly have enough time to post to your very own blog. If you don't have a blog already, you should get one.
I am not good at debate. I never have been. Debate has rules that can be used to bury the truth or facts in a discussion. Debate does not allow for shooting my opponent between the eyes and yelling, "Rebut that motherfucker!" This is why I am not on a debate team.
A link to a web site will never trump my lying eyes. The argument there would have to be insanely good to convince me that I didn't see what I saw. Try to remember I was on the line in West Germany often on the Inter-German and Czechoslovakian borders, in 1987-89. I've seen what Communism looks like and don't want it imported here. Try not to make too much fun of the angry old man.
Much of my anger has to do with being punished for the actions of others.
On the topic of gun control: The core issue is that my guns have killed no one, let alone murdered someone. No gun control law yet passed affects the criminal more than me.
On racism: I've never owned a slave. My family has never owned slaves in recorded history. My family arrived here too late for the Civil war. I and my family have never oppressed. Therefore you are mad at someone else. Using the government to get even with "Whitey" is only tarring me with the same brush.
On Socialism/Communism: The only entity I owe money to is the bank holding my mortgage. I certainly owe my friends things and they owe me. Those associations are entered into freely and openly. I do not owe anyone else anything, nor do I think they owe me. I resent that my taxes are taken to feed and shelter people I don't know. Other than sucking O2, what have they done to earn it? This is punishing me because they are lazy.
On Equality: I have absolutely no objection to equal. But equal is where I draw the line. I will not abide a reversal of positions just because my Dad and Grandfather were racists or sexists (they weren't racists). Go after them, not me. But things must be equal.
Now! If you want to not trip my trigger, when you are part of a group that espouses that I must be punished for the trespasses of others, you must be crystal clear that you are not just rephrasing what the greater organization said in a new and novel way. Without such a clear statement, when a black Democrat talks about the civil rights movement, redistribution of wealth and the Constitution being a barrier, it gets read as reparations to slaves. By the way, the last slave died years ago.
I care far more about what people do than what they say.

Implications
Just watched Sound of Freedom.
Considering the implications of what is said at the end about how much slavery and how many slaves are children in the world...
African American race baiters demanding reparations over something that didn't even happen to them sounds like being bitches.
So, bitches, what are you doing to stop slavery?
I know what one white dude did.

I care far more about what people do than what they say. For example, I have heard from Michele Evermore that Sen Harkin is pro-gun because he's told her that. I know that he votes anti-gun though. There's a dissonance between what he says to her and what he does on the Senate floor.

A Right To Die
First that the business has insurance.
Second that the looting is reparations.
Stealing is stealing even if you've managed to shift the burden of paying for the theft from the business owner to the insurance company.
You are still thieves, Black Lives Matters. Thieves rank very low in my eye. So low that if we changed the laws to let people shoot thieves regardless of the physical threat they pose to the shooter I'd say, "keep shooting until the stealing stops!"
I don't care what color the thief is, but if all the people stealing are black, then all of the corpses will be too.
Don't wanna get shot, don't steal what isn't yours. That's not a racist statement. We shoot every thief without regard to race, sex, gender, religious belief, country of origin or previous state of servitude.
You don't steal, you don't die. Couldn't be simpler and applies to any scumbag who thinks they've a right to someone else's property.
Claiming the businesses are insured is such a scumbag thief thing to say too.
You're simply stealing the premiums the businesses pre-paid to the insurance company. The money isn't magically appearing out of thin air to replace the goods. It's scumbags like the criminal syndicate known as Black Lives Matter who're the reason that businesses have to carry insurance for loss to theft in the first place. People like you were, in effect, stealing from them before you looted the place because they knew there were thieves like you about and sought protection from them.
What your looting will really do is make the place you looted close down and raise the prices at the places that remain. And you thought you couldn't afford it before?
Watching your criminal activity is also closing the minds and hardening the hearts of many people watching you behave exactly the way the one of the few groups who are lower than scumbag thieves, racists, predicted people of color would behave.
When someone looks at the riots and looting and makes a quick comparison to shit like "The White Man's Burden," and begins to wonder if perhaps some of the reconstruction era depictions of blacks are more accurate than they really are...
You've lost the race war already and set yourself up to be oppressed like no other people ever have been in the history of the world. American Indians will look upon you and say, "we got off light."
Because it will be from the moral high ground you will be forever oppressed. Insert C.S. Lewis quote here.
The boot will never lift because history will remember what you did with the glorious gift of freedom bequeathed you by 360 thousand dead white men. A gift you squandered because you did not earn it by your own hands.
A loss you will feel more keenly because you knew freedom once and will have had it taken away.
The tragedy isn't that YOU will be returned to oppression and servitude, but that literally millions of innocent, honest and hard working people who have the bad luck to share your skin-tone will also be punished with you.
But YOU made it about race.
Good job!

Mistake?
-- Zack Webb, University Of Kentucky NAACP
Tell you what, Zack. Pay us back the ~365,000 total dead and 275,200 wounded and we'll talk about how much cash we owe you. I am willing to admit that fighting that war to free your ancestors was a mistake, re-found the CSA and put blacks back in bondage. Is that what you were talking about? Because I think we made the right decision there in 1865, but since you're so damned unhappy about it, we can put it right back!
Fucking ingrates.

The Real Problem
I'll say it. This might get the blog nuked.
The problem with illegal immigration and refugees isn't that they're coming here.
The problem is they're not coming here to be or become Americans.
They're coming here to remain whatever culture or nationality they were back home.
They're forcing us to adapt to their ways rather than adapting and adopting ours.
There's a word for moving, en masse, to another place and forcing the current residents to conform to your nationality and culture.
Colonization.
Minneapolis is currently the biggest city in Somalia.
Miami is the largest city in Cuba.
Los Angeles is vying for the largest city of Mexico.
New Jersey, based on the license plates, appears to be the northernmost province of Puerto Rico.
It's not racist to want them to assimilate, it's nationalist. Another dirty word, according to The Left.
The thing that pisses me off most about it is there's surely people lumped in these enclaves who desperately want to be Americans.
The situation as it stands has them being prevented from assimilating by both their fellow residents of the enclave and by the surrounding native community.
Did you know we've done this before?
New York used to be the largest city in both Ireland and Italy.
Minneapolis used to be the largest city in Sweden.
The process of assimilation is rough. It means not letting the immigrant use their native ways to do much of anything except where those ways already coincide with the natives.
It makes the enclaves insufferable ghettos. Places you don't want to live. Shitty enough to learn how the natives do things. Crummy enough to change your name so the racists among the natives don't pick up on your filthy WOP heritage.
However, if we're going to be playing the victim card.
Mom's side is Italian, Dad's side is Scots/English/Norwegian. All four of these immigrant cultures suffered under the established Anglo-Germanic culture of the early 20th Century midwest.
I deserve substantial cash reparations and I want them now!

Because The Difference Matters
Are you speaking of slavery in America or slavery in The Americas.
Because if you mean America as in "The United States of America," it runs from September 17, 1789 to January 31, 1865. Even so, the issue was primarily thought of as a state issue until right before the war that settled the point.
76 years and change.
From April 19, 1775 to May 12, 1784 who's in charge is up in the air.
From May 12, 1784 to September 17, 1789 it's not the United States, it's that weird transitional confederation entity and it really can't be blamed for slavery in in the independent entities it composed of. The 1789 date doesn't even extend to slave holding places that were French or Spanish then, but are US now.
So prior to the ratification of the US Constitution, slavery is an English, French, Dutch and Spanish problem.
And it ran for far longer than the short seventy some years of US slavery.
Blame them.
I'd love to see Spain blamed for slavery as a whole in the US and be forced to pay for reparations under the same, tortured, logic that they've been hoovering up gold from salvaged galleons.
And if you REALLY want to pick at it, the American Indian practiced slavery until the end of the Indian Wars. Noble savages, indeed!

Repeated In Its Entirety
In election 2008, don’t forget Angry White Man
February 9, 2008
There is a great amount of interest in this year’s presidential elections, as everybody seems to recognize that our next president has to be a lot better than George Bush. The Democrats are riding high with two groundbreaking candidates — a woman and an African-American — while the conservative Republicans are in a quandary about their party’s nod to a quasi-liberal maverick, John McCain.
Each candidate is carefully pandering to a smorgasbord of special-interest groups, ranging from gay, lesbian and transgender people to children of illegal immigrants to working mothers to evangelical Christians.
There is one group no one has recognized, and it is the group that will decide the election: the Angry White Man. The Angry White Man comes from all economic backgrounds, from dirt-poor to filthy rich. He represents all geographic areas in America, from urban sophisticate to rural redneck, deep South to mountain West, left Coast to Eastern Seaboard.
His common traits are that he isn’t looking for anything from anyone — just the promise to be able to make his own way on a level playing field. In many cases, he is an independent businessman and employs several people. He pays more than his share of taxes and works hard.
The victimhood syndrome buzzwords — “disenfranchised,” “marginalized” and “voiceless” — don’t resonate with him. “Press ‘one’ for English” is a curse-word to him. He’s used to picking up the tab, whether it’s the company Christmas party, three sets of braces, three college educations or a beautiful wedding.
He believes the Constitution is to be interpreted literally, not as a “living document” open to the whims and vagaries of a panel of judges who have never worked an honest day in their lives.
The Angry White Man owns firearms, and he’s willing to pick up a gun to defend his home and his country. He is willing to lay down his life to defend the freedom and safety of others, and the thought of killing someone who needs killing really doesn’t bother him.
The Angry White Man is not a metrosexual, a homosexual or a victim. Nobody like him drowned in Hurricane Katrina — he got his people together and got the hell out, then went back in to rescue those too helpless and stupid to help themselves, often as a police officer, a National Guard soldier or a volunteer firefighter.
His last name and religion don’t matter. His background might be Italian, English, Polish, German, Slavic, Irish, or Russian, and he might have Cherokee, Mexican, or Puerto Rican mixed in, but he considers himself a white American.
He’s a man’s man, the kind of guy who likes to play poker, watch football, hunt white-tailed deer, call turkeys, play golf, spend a few bucks at a strip club once in a blue moon, change his own oil and build things. He coaches baseball, soccer and football teams and doesn’t ask for a penny. He’s the kind of guy who can put an addition on his house with a couple of friends, drill an oil well, weld a new bumper for his truck, design a factory and publish books. He can fill a train with 100,000 tons of coal and get it to the power plant on time so that you keep the lights on and never know what it took to flip that light switch.
Women either love him or hate him, but they know he’s a man, not a dishrag. If they’re looking for someone to walk all over, they’ve got the wrong guy. He stands up straight, opens doors for women and says “Yes, sir” and “No, ma’am.”
He might be a Republican and he might be a Democrat; he might be a Libertarian or a Green. He knows that his wife is more emotional than rational, and he guides the family in a rational manner.
He’s not a racist, but he is annoyed and disappointed when people of certain backgrounds exhibit behavior that typifies the worst stereotypes of their race. He’s willing to give everybody a fair chance if they work hard, play by the rules and learn English.
Most important, the Angry White Man is pissed off. When his job site becomes flooded with illegal workers who don’t pay taxes and his wages drop like a stone, he gets righteously angry. When his job gets shipped overseas, and he has to speak to some incomprehensible idiot in India for tech support, he simmers. When Al Sharpton comes on TV, leading some rally for reparations for slavery or some such nonsense, he bites his tongue and he remembers. When a child gets charged with carrying a concealed weapon for mistakenly bringing a penknife to school, he takes note of who the local idiots are in education and law enforcement.
He also votes, and the Angry White Man loathes Hillary Clinton. Her voice reminds him of a shovel scraping a rock. He recoils at the mere sight of her on television. Her very image disgusts him, and he cannot fathom why anyone would want her as their leader. It’s not that she is a woman. It’s that she is who she is. It’s the liberal victim groups she panders to, the “poor me” attitude that she represents, her inability to give a straight answer to an honest question, his tax dollars that she wants to give to people who refuse to do anything for themselves.
There are many millions of Angry White Men. Four million Angry White Men are members of the National Rifle Association, and all of them will vote against Hillary Clinton, just as the great majority of them voted for George Bush.
He hopes that she will be the Democratic nominee for president in 2008, and he will make sure that she gets beaten like a drum.
