What's the "minimum" caliber for a whitetail in GURPS?
The deer has 10 HP off their 10 ST.
So to deliver a potentially fatal blow you've got to do at least 20 points of damage. More is, of course, better.
Since the average hit to the body is a decent metric...
With ball ammunition in the .16 to .31 caliber at "high" velocities and .32 to .39 caliber 20/3.5 = 5.71 dice which is 6d-1 pi.
Hollow or soft points complicate the math a little bit because you lose a point of basic damage from the effects of the armor divisor.
20/5.25 = 3.81 dice, which is 4d-1, but you have to have an extra point for the skin... So 4d(0.5) pi+ is what you need from a gun using hollow points.
4d-1 pi+ will do if you're using ball ammo from something .40 to .59 caliber.
Using hollow points in that caliber range changes things to pi++ but has the modifier.
20/7 = 2.86 or 3d, but don't forget needing an extra point for the skin; 3d+1(0.5) pi++
For rounds .60 caliber or larger a mere 3d pi++ will suffice.
At the small end... Things with pi- need a lot of dice.
20/1.75 = 11.43 or 11d+2 pi-. There just aren't guns that do that.
Even going hollow point would need an unrealistic 6d(0.5) pi.
