The 5.9 lb. AN/PVS-2 gives Night Vision 4.
Compare that to the natural vision of Chimera in Funny New Guys.
Coyote and Foxes have better night vision than the mechanical device and they don't need batteries.
They also don't suffer from color blindness, no depth perception and no peripheral vision while using their night vision.
So,are you saying that with all the R&D billions spent trying to replicate the function of a coyote's eyeballs has pretty much returned the visual equivalent of a Strap-On in the bedroom? Bummer,Duude... Depth perception,, handy stuff when a guy is doing stuff, like walking...
ReplyDeleteBack about thirtyish years ago a couple of guys leased a shop across from the outfit I was working for. They were into building some pretty off the wall stuff and had some, for the time, pretty advanced Visual Aids. They had goggles that, when lookin at a fully warmed up turbo on a Detroit you could see through it. The blades were just a blur, but the part of the turbo nearest to you was clearly defined in a translucent red glow making up the body of it,with dark lines where outside of the casting was,and the shape of the casting on the opposite side,where it connected to the manifold was also defined. and at the same time the back side of it was also visible. I'm not describing it well, I can still See it in my head,but explaining it? I apologize.. Tune in tomorrow when I explain Blue to a blind guy.
They were trying to develop a remote control weapon system. Two tripods with 22 rifles, When they were testing it I was pretty nervous. I wanted a better look at it all, but they weren't into showing it off. They were gone pretty soon after they got there.
If you're new here... The AN/AVS-2 is almost as good as a coyote-chimera's eyes. It's for a role playing game setting.

In this game setting the US wins in Vietnam. The more I work on getting it ready for players to actually play, the more I can see how magic dumping into the world from the Trinity event will change how things go once the idea of magic is incorporated into everyday things. Conservative military being one of the last places to accept that it's real, it works and it's not going away.
I've seen some thermal camera analysis tools for water pumps where you could tell what was going on inside, but not to any great detail. My main thermal camera experience is the sight on an M1 Abrams.
I still think that stuff is neat!
