It's a reality show on Discovery.
It purports to show us the inside world of street racing in and around Oklahoma City, OK.
SIGH
Well, there's certainly enough drama in the premier episode for an entire season of Springer.
I've been around street racing for years and years. I don't race, but I've spectated a bit and I've been friends with the players in two places.
Wanna know something? Every single place that has a street racing community it's about the cars and the races and not about the "relationships".
Even if it were about the relationships, if you're going to film it, you've got to give the viewer something to like or relate to.
Showing us twenty abrasive assholes whom you hope get thrown in jail to be ass-raped at a minimum is not the way to start. Staging the races so obviously you might as well as put the "professional driver on a closed course" disclaimer at the bottom of the screen is not how you sustain.
The market that would be interested in this show will not give two shits about your characters going in cold. Some history is needed. Deadliest Catch did this. There was a mini-series documentary about crab fishing that they ran first, and the buzz from that led to a closer look at the captains and crews.
What we have is a bunch of people who are constantly angry and yelling without any discernible reason to me; and I am a member of their society!
EDIT:
I don't run with those crowds any more. The has been a decreasing regard for safety and respect for others property since a certain movie series was released. Back when the only person go hurt was the driver. Now it could be a bunch of spectators.

Did you read a story in C&D back in the '80s called "The Teacher and the Crows"? Speaking as someone who may or may not have previously engaged in a contest of speed, I have to say it was the best outsider's look at real street racing there is.
