After learning compression, tension, torsion and shear; it drives me nuts to hear someone calling a compression spring as being under tension.

No point of getting wound up about it (see what I did there?) as most Americans, sadly, are ignorant of basic mechanics, chemistry, mathematics, electronics and physics. I had the privilege of attending a school that operated on the basis that 70% of their graduates would enter the work force directly at age 18, with 30% going on to higher education. This means that they covered all the fundamentals of what American colleges and universities teach (well, that is a bit if a stretch eh?) in the first 2 years in the practical sciences.
ReplyDeleteIt is high time for U.S. education system reform to meet this basic manner of teaching, not every kid is cut out for university, much less the way they are currently run.
Happy New Year - and yes, the best days are ahead of us (unless you live in a blue state/city ...NYFC - looking at you and Somalia on the tundra along with the entire West Coast).
Coil springs are torsion springs-isolate 1 turn and flex it.
