Self Reliance

For someone who espoused the idea of self-reliance and responsibility, why is it I only hear about you when you've got your hand out begging?

Gimme money so I can do a once in a lifetime...

Gimme money because I didn't plan...

Gimme money because something tragic happened...

But it's alway Gimme.

But enough about me...

    I don't understand that "gimme" thing. Every time I tried anything remotely like that the answer to me wasn't just "NO" it was more like "F NO!".
