End Of An Era

There are no longer any 24-hour Krispy Kreme Donut locations in Florida.

Dunkin Donuts 24-hour locations rarely make the donuts at that location and are frequently out.  Never mind that if you do find one open, it's drive-thru only and 95% of the experience of getting donuts is looking at what they have on the rack.

I want my America back.

  1. Some years back, in the late 1990s, I worked a designer contract at a company that was negotiating a new 3 year contract with the lab technicians. The techs were not fond of the Dunkin Donuts being offered at their weekly staff meeting/training sessions, and were willing to give up $.50/hr of their proposed raise to get something better.

Not that Krispy Kreme swill, but a local company that made better donuts. The company eagerly agreed, and the techs got the better quality donuts. We designers and engineers had to stay with the Price Chopper garbage...

    1. One company I worked at had donuts on Friday mornings from a local place.

Us folks with smaller sweet teeth asked for a savory option and they started getting bagels too. Again, local.

But when I want a donut, I want a cheap ass mass produced fried example.

  2. I detest drive-thrus on general principles, and I want Pizza Hut back, among other things that went away during the "Covid pandemic."

    1. I miss Pizza Hut as well; Papa John's is garbage, as is Domino Pizzas(I worked as a driver for them about 20 years ago and hated the franchise owners)

I love the gooey Flying J' pizza, but the nearest one is further than I like with my driving limited these days.

The taste is different than PH, but my wife and i love The Blaze pizza. The only problem is the noise level inside the store. My wife and I love to talk with each other during our meals and the music(?) level is very high.

      Just a few suggestions...

    2. My pizza place of choice is a local place. They close their dining room for Covid, and it remains closed, but it's way better than the chains. There are, at least, two other local places that are almost as good.

    3. Pizza Slut is still around, at least out in the wilds of Eastern Washington. Domino's, I've never been a fan of - Better than microwave pizza, but that bar is practically subterranean. Little Caesar's, I used to like (not love), but their current product? Rather get Domino's.

The one I loved, and miss terribly, was Godfather's. IIRC, the corpse of the original company was skinsuited and is now making gas-station heatlamp mini-pizzas, but they're not bad. Nothing comparable to the original, though.

  3. I find I care a lot less about donuts than I used to since I've gone on a restrictive diet. Low carb high protein... donuts are 'sehr streng verbotten'.

But yeah, there are a lot of other businesses that used to be 24/7 that I miss that aren't. Most of the grocery stores and Walmarts around here used to be, but after Dell and a few other companies shut down their factories that used to run 24/7 there aren't as many people out and about at oh-dark-30 and so they've all scaled back their hours.

Luckily here there are a couple of local/regional donut chains (like Shipley's which is a local favorite) which while I don't think they are open 24/7, open at like 4 to 5am and offer fresh donuts. There are a few bagel places too but I'm less familiar. The savory option people love around here are Kablaneks (not to be confused with Kolaches, which are the sweet, usually fruit covered/filled ones). Kablaneks, for those who don't live in an area with a Czech influence, are kinda like a "pig in a blanket". Some are a sausage wrapped in pastry, others it is some other kind of meat and cheese. Kolaches and Kablaneks are the gringo breakfast items around here, but even more often the breakfast taco is found, sometimes called a "breakfast burito" elsewhere.

Damnit... now I'm hungry and none of those things I can eat anymore... Exception being breakfast tacos if I make them with Mission "Carb Balance" tortillas. Those are low carb and high fiber and actually don't suck, which is unusual for such products. Plus Mission sponsors SVRA which is an organization I support.
