Every single time I've mentioned the CMP is selling M1911s, someone just has to mention you can buy a new one for what the CMP wants.
It's an odd psychological compulsion.
I should have finished my degree and gotten a job in academia to get a grant to study it.
It happens with cars quite often as well.
I just noted SCOTUS' response to TDS on the federal bench.
ReplyDeleteThere must be a similar 1911DS that should also be in the DSM-IV (aka "Catalog Of Crazy").
The CMP used to have bargains, now not so much. I bought mine in the second round and felt like I paid too much. Now I look at ammo prices and shake my head, I can reload cheaper. I wish I had a solution for the resellers.

I think the bargains ended just about the same time as the Greek .30-06 ran out. From then on they had to buy from the same places the local gun shop does.
DeleteLike I keep repeating, the provenance is what you're paying for with a CMP 1911, not just a gun. If you don't want that provenance, Auto-Ordnance and Kahr made decent clones. Tisas doesn't even break $500 for theirs.
My application is still pending with the CMP but I am gonna pass. I wanted a 1911 to shoot end thought a surplus one would just be cool. I would want their Service Grade but too much money and possibly not even available. Certainly too much for Range Grade junk at $1100. So I bought the Tisas CMP model and am quite happy with it.
DeleteUnless, and I stress unless you want to purchase a piece of history, the CMP 1911's aren't worth it. I speak as a gunsmith that does custom work on handguns. The last government contract for these ended in 1945. They've seen a ton of use, and countless parts replacements over the years. If they could sit there with you and tell you stories of where they've been, and what they've seen... well, that would be worth the price of admission.

I got my CMP gun because I wanted the same gun I carried. Nailed it! I wanted parkerized. Teeny front sight. Short trigger. Arched mainspring housing. Lanyard ring. Things that are out of fashion with 1911's.
DeleteThe Gov't Model that gets shot most is the .38 Super from Colt... And I think it was around $300 cheaper than my CMP gun back when as well.
