Scammers Using AI Bots to Steal Financial Aid
The Lovely Harvey is on the front lines stopping this!
Her little college is getting very good at spotting them before they get any money and they've been approached by the Dept. of Ed. about their processes.
Got a promotion for it, actually.
Interesting, as the "IT Guy" for a small University, this is extremely concerning to me... We've been getting a LOT of scammers trying to change the direct deposit information of Faculty/Staff, but I'd not heard of financial aid scams. Though if there is money to be stolen, I suppose I should not be surprised. Good luck out there and please pass along a "Congratulations!"
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to the Mrs. on this fine work and the promotion, I hope it includes a bump in remuneration too. Don't know how bad it is in FL but up here in MI the scammers are running rampant and preying on the older folks who are not computer literate enough to determine what they have received. I hope the work turns into an approved teaching tool that can be disseminated/sold nationwide.
ReplyDeleteBecause we didn't have money for a NEW new computer for my mother in law, we installed Linux on her old machine.
DeleteShe got a call telling her about the virus her Windows machine had and how they could fix it if she gave them remote access. Because of the chit-chat I put up while Ubuntu was installing, she was tech savvy enough to see the scam for what it is.
Both the inlaws call when they get calls for anything now.
It helps that their house is in Harvey's name, it keeps them from getting a lot of the calls.
