I was reading about President Trump being at the Daytona 500.
I was struck that I had not actually watched a NACSAR race in years and years.
Not since... Why did I stop watching?
It was a stupid rule change.
I think it was the change to stop the races twice a race and the bullshit with the points to determine who gets the Winston Nextel Sprint Monster Energy NASCAR Cup.
Never mind there's nothing stock about a National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing car any more.
I understand what they were trying to do, but they did it in such a way as to alienate established fans.
I still watch some, but I also don't like the "stage" thing. Nor do I like "overtime" or the "playoff" system. The way the points chase worked back in the classic era was good enough. My family watched NASCAR religiously back in the 1970s and 1980s.
ReplyDeleteI also don't like that stock cars are so not stock. I'm disappointed that GM discontinued the Camaro. Someone needs to kick their asses hard and get them to re-introduce a new model. I think they should be limited how long they can use it in NASCAR following conventions set in the past (like Petty running 1974 MOPAR bodies several years after that because the 1975+ ones were about as aerodynamic as a brick). And I'm about as Chevy biased as it gets. The current senior management at GM are idiots. Of couse Ford isn't much better and MOPAR (Stellantis or whoever) is even worse. I don't think Toyota should be allowed to run "Camry" since they don't make a proper 2-door version of the car, nor do they offer a rear drive V8 version. I'd glady trade Toyota out for Dodge, except Dodge is dumping the Hemi in favor of ain I6 of all things. I guess I'd complain less if Toyota had to compete with a front drive V6 car or at least just a V6. But it would be better if they had to make a proper 2 door rear drive V8 powered car. In the lesser series they use the Supra name, and at least Supra is rear drive... But it's actually made by BMW. Toyota for whatever reason has given up on building a sports car themselves, their smaller one being made by Subaru.
I liked NASCAR a lot better back in the day when there were a whole bunch of brands... Chevy, Olds, Ponitac, Buick, Ford, Mercury, Dodge, Plymouth and further back AMC... Of course AMC got bought out by MOPAR and only Jeep survives out of that, and Plymouth, Mercuty, Olds and Pontiac have all disappeared. And Buck mostly only makes SUVs now.
You know, I probably wouldn't bother watching NASCAR either except someone else in the house is a bigger fan than I am. I also enjoy it less now that my diet doesn't permit unlimited calorie consumption. Alas.
