I Thought Orangutans Were Bigger

I was watching a video about gigantopithecus.

It's a 9' tall, 650ish lb. orangutan.  Maybe 700 lb.

Being the geek I am, I calculated the things ST from its weight.

17 or 18.

How strong is a normal orangutan?

I remember them being a lot larger, like 300 lb. for a male.

Nope.

Just 165 lb. on average for a GURPS ST of 11.  About the same as a chimpanzee.

Gorillas are 400ish lb. and rate a ST of 15 in case you're curious.

Rounding out the great apes is we humans at ST 10.

  1. But the chimps are pretty much all muscle, and capable of ripping limbs off you.
There was a great clip of Johnny Carson being involuntarily dragged across the floor in street shoes when a baby chimp (of maybe 40-50#) elected to pull its blanket back with him holding the other end of it.
Gorillas will break you in pieces because, like chimps, they're used to fighting with their gorilla equals.
Our forte is between our ears (at least theoretically, for those above a 90 IQ), rather than biceps.
Hand-to-hand vs. simians, many of which can climb with just their upper limbs to the tops of 100' trees with ease because they do that all day every day, we're not even in the Bronze Medal category.
