Tobacco didn't make it to Europe until the latter half of the 16th century.
The 16th century is in the latter half of The Renaissance.
That means it's out of place in so many medievalesque fantasy settings.
But you see a lot of pipes in the artwork for such settings, don't you?
I blame Tolkien and his "pipe weed."
Fantasy settings are chock-a-block with anachronisms.
