Sexism

I wonder what feminists would do with the Aslan?

The race has significant sexual dymorphism and a culture that accounts for and embraces it.

They have cultural "women's work".  Like commerce, finance and technical roles.

They have a cultural mechanism for a female to become legally male, and yes that's important!

To quote GT: Alien Races 2,

Gender is much more important in defining Aslan behavior than it is for Humans.

Male Aslan are warriors, concerned with owning land, and the combat and political skills needed to get it and keep it. Those of high status already own land, and are obsessed with gaining more; those of low status scheme constantly to acquire their own land.

Female Aslan are concerned with trade and knowledge; they are engineers, technicians, traders, teachers, scholars, and managers. A common female goal is to amass enough money to marry well – a large fortune both gives her the wherewithal to support a high-status male and demonstrates her capability to run his estate.

I think that an SJW Feminist would find themselves on the wrong side of Fteir in short order.

Both sexes have a role in Aslan society and are considered complimentary and necessary.

    2. Hey Angus;

They are similar to Kzini, from what I have read.

    3. The Aslan are kinda/sorta K'zinti, true.

But the detail differences matter and when you dig down to generate a character and play it, you hit them fast and see how different the two space-kitties are.

(Digging up 40 years of playing the game here).

It's apt that there's a resemblance to Niven's aliens because he's a strong proponent of aliens being ALIEN. They don't look like you, they don't think like you, they don't act like you.

Traveller is one of the very few games where the authors grabbed Niven's philosophy on alien design and really stuck the landing.

Except where they're literally human, there's not a single human-with-an-eyebrow-appliance race (like way too often in Star Trek for example). And even many of the humans are very alien.

    4. And that explains the Hivers right there... Aliens being... alien. Closest thing to a Cthulhu-ian race you'll see. Intelligent space starfish that like to tinker with other sophont races' minds just to see how things work. And 'fix' any 'mental' problems they deem fixable, from their perspective.

Some of the minor non-human races are Sol System descended. Uplifted dolphins and gorillas, being two of the more memorable races, uplifted by Humans. All from earth, all definitely not human.

And, of course, the smart, talking, walking upright wolves, the Vargr, whom the Ancients created. From Earth, but still very not-human, but can work and fit in pretty well with humans, to an extent.

Of course, one should never ever forget those radical vegetarian centauroids, the K'kree. Really alien aliens.

    5. Hiver aren't THAT bad.

But it takes some twisting to get into their braincase and some more twisting to get back out.

  2. According to the Aslan and Vargr, Hivers are just great...if you marinade them in barbeque sauce and cook them long and slow over open coals. MMM MMM Good!
