Shiny Parkerization

The CMP gun has an odd finish.

It's a strangely lustrous silver gray.  Not what I am accustomed to in something parkerized.

  1. The lighter color is probably from a zinc based solution vs a manganese one.

The shine is probably from the grease they were packed in.

After I did the heated grease trick from 'Xavier Thoughts" on my Pop's Springfield GI 45 the finish is shinier and smooth now.

    1. The Springfield is zinc-parkerized. There's a wide range of color.

It's not the color so much as the shiny metallic that's got me wondering. Park is flat, not semi-gloss.

The shine didn't come from oil. The CMP gun was bone dry when I got it. It sucked up at least an ounce of LSA after I got it, the sheen didn't really change.

  2. Hmm... That's interesting.

I did know that the color varies, but I thought the shine was from trapped grease.

Maybe it has to with the difference of a fresh/recent park vs an older/storage worn park.

    1. I think I'm going to end up finding that there's a specific zinc based formulation with very small granularity that ends up being shiny like this and VERY light gray.

Lots of the old processes would be banned by the EPA today (or were banned that's why they stopped using them). Like the stellite lining in the M60's barrels.

    2. Hmm...

Stellite lined barrels are still available.

    3. That's news! Maybe they found a new way to do it that the EPA didn't have kittens over.

  3. Man... I remember reading that article when it was new.
