I can't figure this one out.
Yesterday we thought to look for a couple spare magazines for our M&P 9's.
Shooter's World had 10 rounders and 15 rounders, but no 17 rounders. Genuine S&W branded magazines too.
That got us to wondering why 15 rounds?
A quick check at Midway and Smith & Wesson shows that the 17 round is the standard magazine and still in production.
I know why they make a 10 round magazine, but not why they make a 15 round.

I've seen a similar thing for my Taurus 92 - the factory mags are 17 or 19 rounds, but on the rare occasions that I can find them, they are $45+; I can find new or used 15 rounders from $12 9many of them made in Taiwan).
ReplyDeleteThe Taurus 92 is widely used overseas as a military sidearm - I wonder if the 15 rounders are made to give more space for better function and feeding?
The Taurus 92 started with 15 rounds then got more capacity later as their supplier, MecGar, got more inventive. The 92 also can take Beretta 92 magazines, thus the massive supply of 15 rounders.
DeleteMecGar for the win in regards to magazines
ReplyDeleteI use them for my Browning High-Power. MecGar is also the OEM magazine maker for lots of pistols.
DeleteThey don't make magazines for the M&P yet...
DeleteDuh. I saw S&W and was thinking 3rd Gen Autos
DeleteFifteen rounds is the limit in New Jersey. Maybe some other states, too.
ReplyDeleteColorado has a 15 round limit as well.
ReplyDeleteMaking 15 rounders for the same reason as 10 rounders makes sense.
ReplyDeleteNow the big question becomes, "Why on earth does a Florida gun shop stock neutered magazines?"

ReplyDeleteNot that I'm recommending CTD... because they should normally be referred to "Expensive as $#!+"... but if you want 17 rounders, you can always just order them online.
We're not having any difficulty in finding a 17 rounder. We were simply baffled that a 15 rounder existed for them. This gun store doesn't carry 15 round Glock 17 magazines, for example.
DeleteMidwayUSA is usually good, although not cheaper in this case...

CDNN is cheaper, a little slow to ship sometimes but I've never had any problems with them other than that...
